The passage of Citizens United granted corporations the same legal status normally reserved for human beings. What does it mean that a corporation is now a person? What does it mean for art-making? Wouldn’t a corporation want an iconic portrait to immortalize itself? What image is the face of a corporation? Who are the art patrons today? Can logos be sampled in painting as in music? What does it mean to “own” an image or motto? The corporations selected are large multi-nationals that have been highlighted in the news for legally paying less in federal taxes than you and me; for market domination; for bringing the economy to the brink of disaster during the Great Recession.
