Mt. Rainier has a power and vibration like no other I've known before. When I first visited Seattle in 2012, I found the mountain (actually a volcano, but we'll stick with mountain for this story) kept popping up when I least expected it. Almost every time, I screamed or startled when I saw it on the horizon. I couldn't decide if it terrified or thrilled me. A believer in signs, I had no idea how to read this one: what did it portend? I decided in the end that it foretold a great adventure--a choice I made just as we made the decision to move to Seattle. Every sunny day in Seattle, I see the mountain and it brings me joy. This painting portrays the emotional impact of this beautiful mountain.

The squares are drawn with a ruler but painted by hand. Mixed media, 36" x 48."

Seattle: A Love Story is series of memoir paintings telling the story of my journey to Seattle. The story behind these paintings is a story of social justice. It is rare in the history of the world, and in many countries today, for women to have the opportunity to marry and remarry, choose the timing of their children, own property, move cross-country, gain an education, and earn income. Until recently, I took that privilege for granted. No more. My love story with Seattle represents a moment in time and opportunity that I hope to see grow for women worldwide in my lifetime. I am grateful for these liberties and celebrate them through this series of post-abstract landscapes that tell the story of life and love in Seattle.
